Dogs usually stay within a few kilometres and often circle back — here's what actually helps.
Dogs rarely go far right away. Walk a widening circle from where they went missing — gardens, sheds, under parked cars, building sites. Check twice; dogs can stay very still when scared.
Leave their bed, a worn piece of your clothing, or their favourite toy at the spot they were last seen. The familiar smell can bring a nervous dog back on its own.
Streets are quieter and dogs are more likely to be moving around. Bring a lead, treats, and their favourite squeaky toy — sound often works better than shouting a name.
Knock on doors nearby, and check your local council's dog warden — many strays are picked up within the first day.
If your dog is chipped, make sure your phone number on the microchip database is current — it's the fastest way a vet or warden can reach you.
